It has been pretty well covered that the major media titans (Rupert Murdoch, the Associated Press, etc.) all have a severe disdain for aggregation on the web, to the point of delusional obsession. Without aggregation, they seem to have convinced themselves, they would dominate the internet news business just like they dominated the print news industry before. Besides the obvious self-important (and suicidal) overtones to that line of thinking, fighting linking and aggregation only serves to show how out of touch they are with what the internet culture actually is. It’s no wonder they haven’t yet found a means of exploiting it to great profit.
Anyway, here is letter from head of the UK’s top news aggregation site, newsnow.co.uk, that serves as both a strong, logical defense of news aggregation and a condemnation of the established publishing industry all rolled into one. I couldn’t have said it better myself, and I’ve tried.
